Questions about the D Kurd
D Kurd 10-note handpan: features and musical scale
The D Kurd 10 is crafted from Ember Steel, a heat-treated nitrided steel that delivers excellent rust resistance and a long, warm sustain. Measuring 55.9 cm across and 28 cm high at 4.5 kg, it offers wide, comfortable note fields that are easy to strike accurately — a real advantage when you are just starting out.
Its musical scale is D natural minor, running from the low D (D3) at the centre of the instrument (the “ding”) up to a high C (C5): D3 / A3 – Bb3 – C4 – D4 – E4 – F4 – G4 – A4 – C5. The layout spans almost two octaves, letting you play deep meditative drones as well as bright, crystalline melodies.
Every instrument is hand-tuned note by note to 440 Hz (the international standard) or 432 Hz (favoured for meditation and sound healing), then checked before shipping and delivered with its tuning certificate. Because Kurd is a complete natural minor mode, every note harmonises with every other no matter the order you strike them — which is why people say you simply cannot play a wrong note on a D Kurd.
